An aspirant for the Zamfara North Senatorial ticket of the All Progressives Congress, Dr. Sani Shinkafi, has dragged the party to court over the outcome of its recent primary election.
Shinkafi, who contested the senatorial ticket on the APC platform, is challenging the emergence of incumbent senator Sahabi Ya’u as the winner of the exercise conducted on May 19.
Addressing journalists in Gusau shortly after filing the suit at the Federal High Court on Monday, Shinkafi alleged that the process that produced Ya’u did not comply with laid-down procedures and constitutional provisions.
“We are challenging the outcome of the primaries held on May 19 that produced Sen. Sahabi Ya’u as the winner.
“The APC failed to adhere to the guidelines of the Electoral Act and the Nigerian Constitution during the primaries.
“We are not satisfied with the outcome, hence we filed this case seeking legal action,” Shinkafi explained.
Counsel to the plaintiff, Bello Galadi, also maintained that the legal action was necessary to address what he described as irregularities surrounding the primary election.
“We came to court to file grievance against emergence of Sen. Ya’u as APC candidate for Zamfara North senatorial district.
“The Electoral Act is clear on how a candidate emerges as contained in sections 84 and 85 of the Constitution.”
