Shettima Reaffirms Nigeria’s Stand Against Nuclear Weapons, Backs Global Test Ban

Vice President Kashim Shettima has reaffirmed Nigeria’s firm commitment to a comprehensive nuclear test ban, stressing that Africa’s priority is tackling poverty and climate change not nuclear arms.

Speaking during a courtesy visit by Dr. Robert Floyd, Executive Secretary of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organisation (CTBTO), at the Presidential Villa on Monday, Shettima said:

We have no business dabbling in nuclear weapons. The outcome of nuclear conflict is never a win-win situation.”

He lauded CTBTO’s global monitoring efforts and its added role in detecting natural disasters like tsunamis and earthquakes, calling the organisation’s work “vital to ecological stability.”

Dr. Floyd praised Nigeria’s leadership and strong collaboration through agencies like the Nigerian Atomic Energy Commission (NAEC) and the Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NNRA), highlighting their contributions to global nuclear safety and disaster preparedness.

Also in attendance were senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, NAEC, and NNRA, including Amb. Dunoma Ahmed and Dr. Yau Idris.
