Former Kaduna Central senator, Shehu Sani, has alleged that supporters of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) in the United States are behind the promotion and funding of claims of a “Christian genocide” in Nigeria.
Sani, in a post on X on Friday, claimed the narrative was deliberately pushed by IPOB supporters abroad to advance their secessionist agenda.
He also faulted the Federal Government’s reported $9 million payment to US lobbyists to counter the claims, arguing that the move yielded little impact.
“Secessionist IPOB supporters in the US concocted, promoted, sponsored and hawked the issue of ‘Christian genocide’ to achieve their goals,” Sani wrote. “In response, the Federal Government reportedly spent $9 million of taxpayers’ money on US lobbyists.”
According to him, despite the spending, Nigeria remains classified as a “country of particular concern”, even while partnering with the United States to combat terrorism.
