She Has Her Own Money — Peter Obi Breaks Silence on Wife’s Alleged N250m Bag

The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has responded to controversy surrounding an alleged N250 million Hermès bag reportedly used by his wife, Margaret.

Obi addressed the issue during an interview in Washington, D.C., United States, where he said his wife had her own business and finances.

The luxury handbag had recently sparked debate over Obi’s public image of prudence and his stance on responsible management of public funds.

Reacting to the controversy, the former Anambra State governor said his wife was “far more sophisticated” before he became governor.

Obi said he had no problem with how his wife spent her money, provided her spending did not interfere with his management of public funds.

“My wife has her own business and her own money, so what is my business if she buys expensive items with her money?

“The bags and shoes my wife wears, I don’t even know how much they cost. In fact, she is actually a bit less sophisticated now,” Obi said.

He also recalled that he did not establish an office of the First Lady during his tenure as governor of Anambra State.

The former governor added that although he does not celebrate his birthday, he does not prevent people from celebrating him.
