Seun Kuti Sparks Debate on Social Media: “Sex is a Mutual Act, Not a Favor”

Nigerian singer Seun Kuti has sparked a lively discussion on social media with his recent comments about the nature of sex.

According to Kuti, sex should be viewed as a shared experience between two people, rather than as something one person “gives” to another. His perspective has stirred debate, especially regarding traditional views of sex in relationships.

Kuti shared these thoughts on September 19, 2024, through an Instagram story. He highlighted that only sex workers “give” sex as part of their profession, while in other situations, sex is a mutual act.

“No one gives anyone sex except a prostitute. Sex is a mutual act. It’s not a favor, and you didn’t do anything special—you just had sex, a natural act that even cave men and women did. Nigerian women, sex isn’t a favor unless you are a prostitute, and that isn’t a bad thing either,” he wrote.

His comments quickly went viral, with hundreds of responses pouring in. Many social media users joined the conversation, sharing their thoughts on the dynamics of sexual relationships, particularly in Nigeria. Some applauded his take, while others offered different perspectives.

One commenter suggested that men, especially in Nigeria, should stop feeling entitled to sex after minimal effort or interaction, further adding to the growing conversation about respect and mutual consent in relationships.

Kuti’s statement has touched on an important topic, sparking reflections on how society views sexual relations and the expectations often placed on individuals within them.
