Seun Kuti Declares ‘Egypt 80’ as Africa’s Most Successful Band

—

Grammy-nominated Afrobeat musician Seun Kuti, who inherited the Egypt 80 band from his late father, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, made a bold claim about the band’s success.

In an interview with City 105.1 FM, Kuti said that Egypt 80 is the most successful band in Africa. He emphasized his influential role as the band’s frontman and expressed that he speaks his mind without fear of backlash.

Kuti explained, “I won’t stop speaking my mind because I’m not afraid anymore. What can you do to me? Not play my videos? You’re already doing that. So what else?”

He pointed out that even though he was nominated for a Grammy, no African award organizations recognized his band. He stated, “No matter what anyone says, I, Seun, lead Africa’s most successful band. We have 54 albums, and soon it will be 55.”

Kuti described the band as an important African musical institution and criticized the lack of recognition from African award organizations. He believes that the band deserves national recognition for its achievements and its role in representing African music globally.
