We’re nearing the latter part of the year, which means only one thing; the Pirelli calendar is coming.
Details are still sparse, but we can reveal that tennis ace Serena Williams will star and it will be shot by famed photographer Annie Leibowitz.
Williams broke the news via Twitter, with Pirelli later confirming it. It appears Williams was photographed by Leibowitz in New York about three months ago, according to an Instagram picture which shows her embracing the photographer after working with her on a ‘#funproject’.
‘The Cal’, as it is known, is renowned for its raciness. Last year it featured models including Gigi Hadid, Joan Smalls, Adriana Lima and Natalia Vodianova all in various states of undress and sporting latex accessories. It was styled by Carine Roitfeld, the former editor-in-chief of French Vogue, and shot by Steven Meisel.
It will be the second time Leibowitz has captured the calendar – her first time was for the 2000 edition. In something of a parallel, i-D points out that Leibowitz also took the opportunity to include a sportswoman then; Olympic athlete Jacqui Agyepong. The inclusion of Williams suggests that the calendar, which ordinarily includes only well-known models, is taking a different approach to the 2016 issue. Of late, Williams has been subject to numerous mean-worded critiques about her athletic stature but has boldly hit back, saying: “I love that I’m a full woman and I am strong, and I’m powerful, and I’m beautiful at the same time, and there’s nothing wrong like that.”
So, perhaps, the 2016 Pirelli calendar will have a slightly deeper message this time.
