Senegal’s New President Makes History with Two First Ladies

—

In a groundbreaking move that has sparked widespread debate and discussion, Senegal’s newly elected president, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, has assumed office with not one, but two first ladies by his side. As Sociologist Fatou Sow Sarr highlighted, “Polygamy, monogamy, polyandry are matrimonial models determined by the history of every nation.”

Polygamy, deeply rooted in Senegalese culture and religious practice, takes center stage as Faye embraces both of his wives, Marie Khone (whom he married last year) and Absa (his 15-year spouse and mother of four children), in the spotlight of national politics. With the overwhelming majority of the country being Muslim, Faye’s choice reflects a cultural norm where polygamous unions are widely accepted.

As Sociologist Djiby Diakhate stated, “It’s the ultimate recognition of the tradition of polygamy at the top of the state, with a situation that will reflect Senegalese reality.”

However, reactions to this move have been mixed. While some praise it as a reflection of Senegalese reality and tradition, others, particularly women, express skepticism and criticism. They view polygamy as unfair and discriminatory. Singer Mia Guisse had once said, “Being a second wife suits me better than being a first.”

Former culture minister and history professor Penda Mbow said of the development, “Until now, there was only one First Lady. This means the entire protocol must be reviewed.”

The decision has ignited a broader conversation about marriage models, with comparisons drawn to other forms of marriage, including homosexual marriage. It also raises questions about the role of the First Lady and the need to adapt existing protocols to accommodate this new matrimonial situation at the presidential palace.

Despite criticism, Faye remains resolute, expressing pride in his family and emphasizing the support of his wives and the beauty of his children.

Yet, challenges and controversies persist, both domestically and internationally, with calls for greater transparency regarding polygamous unions and concerns about discrimination against women.
