Senate To Hold Emergency Session, Wednesday Amid Looming Nationwide Protest

The President of the Senate, Sen. Godswill Akpabio, summoned an emergency session of the Red Chamber of the National Assembly on Monday as part of the measures to dampen the planned nationwide protests fixed for August 1.

The session is scheduled to take place on Wednesday, July 31, which will be 24 hours ahead of the first day of the protests.

The communication on the emergency session was contained in an internal memorandum from the Senate Clerk of the Senate, Mr. Chinedu Akubueze, urging senators to attend the session.

The communication reads; “Dear Distinguished Senators, The President of the Senate, His Excellency, Senator Godswill Obot Akpabio, GCON, has directed that an emergency plenary sitting of the Senate be convened as follows:

Date: Wednesday, July 31st, 2024;

Time: 12 p.m.

We regret all the inconveniences that this interruption of recess will cause. Thanks for your usual understanding.”

Lawmakers had earlier proceeded on their annual recess on July 23, a break that would last till September 17, 2024.

The emergency session may also be used to pay tribute to the late Senator Ifeanyi Uba (APC, Anambra-South), who died in London on Saturday.
