Security Guard Drags Tenant to Court Over Alleged Death Threats, Intimidation

A security guard, John Chukwudi, has dragged a tenant before a Chief Magistrate’s Court in Mararaba, Nasarawa State, over alleged death threats, intimidation and assault.

Chukwudi, who works as the security guard at No. 6 Nick Ejeh Close in Karu, accused the tenant, Jerry Adatiure, of repeatedly threatening his life and violating the property’s security regulations.

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the allegations when the matter came up on Friday.

Testifying before the court, Chukwudi said that residents of the property had been directed by management to return home no later than 11:30 p.m. due to the worsening security situation in the area.

According to him, Adatiure consistently ignored the directive, often leaving the house around 5 p.m. and returning in the early hours of the morning.

He alleged that on one occasion, the defendant arrived home at about 1:30 a.m., created a disturbance, assaulted him and threatened to kill him.

The court admitted a flash drive containing a recorded voice note as an exhibit.

Chukwudi further alleged that the tenant repeatedly intimidated and verbally abused him, claiming that in another recorded conversation, Adatiure warned him that “if he is not careful with him, he will never live to give testimony.”

The second voice note was also admitted as evidence by the court.

The complainant told the court that the alleged threats had left him living in fear for his life and the safety of his family.

He urged the court to issue a criminal summons or a warrant for Adatiure’s arrest over alleged criminal intimidation and threats to life.

Chief Magistrate Joy Faruk granted the defendant bail in the sum of N300,000 with one surety in like amount.

The magistrate ordered that the surety must reside within the court’s jurisdiction and provide a valid means of identification.

The case was adjourned until July 15 for hearing.
