Saved By The Inner Voice

She tiptoed into the deep, dense and dark woodland,

where nocturnal creepy creatures ruled and roared.

She had heard of lethal snakes that could deliver bites

so strong that they could drain one, but she strode on.

Beyond the hissing hills, in a hushed, hidden cave,

midwifed by lazy leaves, she delivered and dumbed.

She sought to be ‘liberated’ from maternal responsibility.

She desired to feel ‘girlish’ and free, still guilt ensnared her.

She was not sure whether that was a beneficial emotion for her to feel.

She felt guilty about what she had just done.

No, it was not a positive emotion. It was a negative one.

That lingering emotion gave her a motion, a pricking prod.

It gave her a dogged warning about her dastardly deed.

She lugged a sickening sack of ignominy and liability.

Surreally, she could hear the sorrowful screams of her baby as if she were a few meters away,

yet she had paced 7 km away from the unseen cavern where her cute kid was forsaken.

Her troubled thoughts took her back to three brain networks.

She began to imagine what her dumbed baby was thinking,

her innocence and hurt, and the right course of action to take.

Empathy experienced a rebirth: she had the ability to understand and share the feelings of her baby.

Would she be alive if her mom had decided to dump her? Wasn’t a gale threatening?

Conscience pricked her. Compassion was rebooted. She had pity and concern.

She heeded. Empathy and sympathy turned into her inner voice.

Tempest threatened. Love won. She raced back to recover her baby.
