In a scathing post on X, former Senator Shehu Sani lambasted education officials across Nigeria for their glaring negligence following the recent collapse of the Saint Academy building in Jos, Plateau State, which resulted in the deaths of at least 24 students.
Sani criticized the lack of proactive measures to ensure the structural integrity of school buildings during the vacation period, warning that this continued disregard could lead to further tragedies.
“After the Jos school tragedy, education officials nationwide are supposed to take advantage of the vacation period, go round schools and check the structural integrity of school buildings. Nothing is done. Until another tragedy occurs and then we will say it’s from God,” Sani stated, reflecting a sentiment of frustration and urgency.
The collapse of the Saint Academy building in the Busa Buji community two weeks ago left many students trapped in the rubble, with several eventually rescued. This disaster has cast a spotlight on the perilous state of many school buildings in Plateau State and beyond.
Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State recently disclosed that an alarming 12 more schools are at imminent risk of collapse. During the inauguration of a technical committee to investigate the Saints Academy incident, Governor Mutfwang emphasized the critical need for immediate action to prevent further loss of life.
“It is imperative that we understand why this incident occurred, identify any lapses in duty, and implement measures to prevent a recurrence. Reports indicate that around 12 other schools in the city are at risk of collapse, which necessitates urgent action,” he said.
Governor Mutfwang affirmed his commitment to enforcing stringent safety measures across the state, stating, “We will continue to enforce necessary changes with compassion, avoiding unnecessary hardship for our people. However, we cannot compromise on the safety of innocent lives. The loss of 24 children is a grave reminder of the urgency of our mission.”
