San Antonio Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama has been named NBA Rookie of the Year after averaging 21.4 points, 10.6 rebounds, 3.9 assists, a league-high 3.6 blocked shots, and 1.2 steals a game.
The 20-year-old is the first Frenchman to win the accolade and the first unanimous Rookie of the Year since Karl-Anthony Towns in 2016.
Wembanyama won the award despite his team finishing with the second-worst record in the Western Conference. He’s regarded as one of the youngest talents, a feat that has helped him scope the award of rivals.
While speaking with TNT Sports, Victor said his goals have been to help his team reach climax and his individual prowess will commensurate with the proposed achievement:
“My goals were always to help my team as best as I could and to get better as the year went on,” Wembanyama told TNT Sports.
“I knew that to do this, I had to be individually good on the court and dominant. [Rookie of the Year] is a massive thing for me, a big thing to get.
“It has always been really important, and I’m glad it’s finally official.”
Victor’s professional career, began with Nanterre 92 and progressing to ASVEL and Metropolitans 92, reflects his rapid rise in the basketball world, marked by numerous accolades and achievements.

Before making his senior debut with the French first team, Wembanyama’s contributions to the youth level, further underscore his status as a rising star in the basketball world.
