Russia’s Shiveluch Volcano Erupts After Earthquake, Triggers ‘Code Red’ for Aircraft

The Shiveluch volcano, one of Russia’s most active volcanoes, has erupted, triggering a “code red” warning for all aircraft.

According to volcanologists from the Russian Academy of Sciences, the eruption was triggered by a powerful 7.0 magnitude earthquake that struck off Kamchatka’s east coast on Sunday morning. Volcanologists have also warned that a more powerful earthquake, with a magnitude of 9.0, could hit again “within 24 hours.”

Despite the earthquake’s magnitude, there have been no immediate reports of injuries or disrupted commercial flights.
