Rivers Police Scrap Tactical Units, Unleash New Anti-Crime Strike Force

The Rivers State Police Command has disbanded its tactical squads in a sweeping reform aimed at enhancing operational efficiency and professionalism.

Spokesperson of the command, ASP Blessing Agabe, disclosed this development to reporters in Port Harcourt on Wednesday, noting that the move was in compliance with a directive issued by the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu.

According to her, the scrapped tactical formations have now been consolidated into a newly created outfit known as the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU).

“The VCRU is mandated to respond swiftly and decisively to incidents of violent crime, while adhering to established rules of engagement and respect for fundamental human rights,” she said.

Agabe explained that the overhaul is designed to improve coordination within the force and rebuild public trust in policing operations across the state.

She further quoted the Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju, as issuing a stern warning to officers against misconduct, including extortion and abuse of authority.

“Any violation of the Nigeria Police Force Code of Conduct will attract disciplinary action,” Adepoju said.

The police boss reassured residents of sustained efforts to safeguard lives and property, urging citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities or unethical behaviour by officers.

He reaffirmed the command’s commitment to delivering a more transparent, accountable, and community-focused policing system in the state.
