Rights of A Pensioner Under The Pension Reform Act

Under the Pension Reform Act of 2014 in Nigeria, pensioners have several rights that ensure their financial security and well-being. Here are some of the key rights:

Right to Timely Pension Payments: Pensioners have the right to receive their pension payments on schedule.

Section 4(1)(a): Ensures payment of pension benefits to eligible pensioners.

Section 7(1)(c): Mandates PFAs to pay pension benefits within stipulated timelines.

Right to Lump Sum Payment: Upon retirement, pensioners are entitled to a lump sum payment. Section 7(1)(a): Entitles pensioners to a lump sum payment upon retirement.

Right to Programmed Withdrawals: Pensioners can opt for programmed withdrawals or annuities to receive their retirement benefits. Section 7(1) (b): Allows pensioners to opt for programmed withdrawals or annuities.

Right to Pension Fund Administration: Section 10(1): Ensures pension funds are managed by licensed PFAs to ensure the safety and growth of their retirement savings.

Right to Retirement Savings Account (RSA) Management Section 12 (1): Pensioners have the right to maintain an RSA with a PFA of their choice and transfer it if needed.

Right to Transparency Section 13(1): Allows pensioners to transfer their RSA from one PFA to another,

Section 17(1): Requires PFAs to provide pensioners with regular statements of account,

Section 18(1): Entitles pensioners to access information about their pension contributions and investment returns.

Pensioners have access to information about their pension contributions, account balance, and investment returns.

Right to Redress: Pensioners can file complaints with the National Pension Commission (PenCom) or PFAs regarding any issues with their pension benefits.

Section 79(1): Establishes the National Pension Commission (PenCom) to resolve disputes.

Section 80(1): Empowers PenCom to investigate and sanction erring PFAs.

These rights aim to provide a comfortable retirement for pensioners and ensure that their contributions are safeguarded.
