Remi Tinubu Unveils ₦2bn Support for Akwete Weavers, Urges Nigerians to Preserve Cultural Heritage

ABIA, Nigeria – Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has called on Nigerians to preserve the nation’s cultural heritage by promoting the renowned Akwete handwoven fabric on the global stage, describing it as a priceless symbol of the country’s history, creativity, and identity.

Speaking during a visit to the Akwete weaving community in Abia State, Senator Tinubu said Nigeria’s indigenous crafts must be protected and passed on to future generations. She stressed that preserving traditional industries is vital to strengthening the country’s cultural identity while creating sustainable economic opportunities for local artisans.

To support the growth of the centuries-old weaving industry, the First Lady announced a ₦2 billion intervention for the development of the Akwete production facility. She noted that the investment would enhance production capacity, improve the livelihoods of weavers, and position the iconic fabric to compete more effectively in international markets.

Senator Tinubu urged young Nigerians to embrace traditional crafts and learn indigenous skills, emphasizing that cultural heritage should not be abandoned in the pursuit of modernization. According to her, every generation has a responsibility to preserve the values, traditions, and craftsmanship that define Nigeria’s diverse cultural landscape.

She further described the Akwete fabric as more than a textile, calling it a living expression of Nigeria’s history and resilience. By investing in its preservation, she said, the country is protecting a legacy while unlocking opportunities for economic empowerment, tourism, and national development.

The visit underscores ongoing efforts to promote Nigeria’s rich cultural industries as instruments of economic growth and global recognition, with the historic Akwete handwoven fabric standing out as one of the nation’s most treasured indigenous crafts.
