Real Madrid and Inter Milan will renew one of European football’s most historic rivalries today when they meet in the opening round of the UEFA Champions League.
The Spanish giants aim to start their title charge on a strong note, and Inter hope to end Real Madrid’s recent dominance in the fixture.
The News Chronicle reports that the clubs have faced one another 19 times in European competition, with Real Madrid recording 10 wins, Inter winning seven and two draws. Their rivalry dates back to the 1964 European Cup final, which Inter won 3 to 1.
Real Madrid have won their last four meetings with Inter, including the two fixtures in the Champions League in the 2020/21 and 2021/22 campaigns.
The game will also have added spice for José Mourinho, who faces his former side for the first time since he led Inter to Champions League glory and a historic treble in 2010.
Meanwhile, Manchester City go to Porto, Borussia Dortmund host Villarreal, Club Brugge welcome Aston Villa, and Lille and Real Betis play, while AEK Athens host LASK.
