Rating President Tinubu’s first 100 days in office?

—

President Bola Tinubu’s 100 days in office have been marked by a mixed bag of achievements and challenges.

President Tinubu recently clocked a 100 days in office as president of Nigeria. With the court cases challenging his victory in the 2023 presidential election as declared by INEC, the socio-economic effects of his now famous declaration that “subsidy is gone”, international events like coups in Niger and Gabon, global economic summits and many others, president Tinubu has surely had his hands filled with tasks.

Tinubu One Week After

One way to rate President Tinubu’s 100 days in office is to consider the following factors:

  • Progress on key campaign promises: Did the President make any promises during the election campaign that he has begun to fulfill? If so, how much progress has he made?
  • Performance on key issues: How has the President performed on key issues such as the economy, security, education, and healthcare?
  • Appointments: How has his appointments been able to address issues like competency, diversification, inclusiveness and affirmative action?
  • Public satisfaction: How satisfied is the public with the President’s performance? This can be assessed through public opinion polls and surveys.

Though his supporters claim he has appointed a diverse cabinet with experienced technocrats and politicians compared to his predecessor, Buhari, taken steps to address the country’s economic challenges, like removing fuel subsidies and unifying the multiple exchange rates, boost Nigeria’s regional and international presence through shuttle diplomacy, critics think otherwise  as the country is still facing high levels of insecurity, inflation, and poverty, the removal of fuel subsidies has led to increased hardship for many Nigerians, and then the challenge of transparency and accountability.

Giving a definitive assessment of President Tinubu’s performance in office, might be herculian, yet it is necessary to serve as a call to the administration to also asses itself.

Though we do not claim to have the single “correct” way to rate President Tinubu’s 100 days in office as different people will have different priorities and perspectives. Ultimately, it is up to each individual to decide how they would rate the President’s performance.
