Professor Mohammed Laminu Mele has been appointed as the new Vice-Chancellor of the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID).
His appointment follows a five-month period where he served in the role in an acting capacity. The official announcement was made during a special meeting of the university’s governing council, which took place on Wednesday.
The decision to appoint Professor Mele as the Vice-Chancellor was based on the recommendations made by the Joint Council and Senate Selection Board.
The board had carefully reviewed four candidates who were considered for the prestigious position, ultimately selecting Professor Mele as the best fit for the role.
The news of his appointment was confirmed through a press release signed by Ahmad A. Lawan, the registrar of the university.
The statement emphasized that Professor Mele’s extensive background in academia and his previous leadership roles within the university made him a strong candidate for the position.
Professor Mele is a distinguished scholar in English Language and Linguistics, with over two decades of experience in teaching, research, and community service.
Throughout his career, he has made significant contributions to both his field and the university.
Prior to his appointment as Vice-Chancellor, he held several key positions, including serving as the head of the Department of English and Literary Studies, the sub-dean of the Faculty of Arts, and as the Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Administration.
