Professor Dies in Boko Haram Captivity After Nearly One Year

Professor Abubakar Mohammed El-Jummah of the Nigerian Army University, Biu, Borno State, has died while in the custody of Boko Haram insurgents after spending almost one year in captivity.

The late academic was abducted on March 2, 2025, and remained in Boko Haram custody until his death, marking another tragic loss linked to the protracted insurgency in the North-East.

A funeral prayer in absentia (Salatul Ga’ib) will be held today, Thursday, February 12, 2026, at about 2:00 p.m. at the Ngomari Old Airport Juma’at Mosque, near his residence in Maiduguri.

Professor El-Jummah’s death has sparked renewed grief within the academic community and among residents of Borno State, with colleagues and well-wishers describing him as a dedicated scholar whose life was cut short by insecurity in the region
