Anambra State Government on Wednesday, announced the appointment of Professor Kate Azuka Omenugha as the new Vice Chancellor of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu University, formerly Anambra State University. The appointment was announced by the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Chukwuma Soludo, Christian Aburime in a statement made available to newsmen in Awka.
It follows the expiration of the former VC, Professor Greg Nwakoby, this weekend. The appointment marks the first time in its twenty-three years old history, that the university is having a female Vice-Chancellor. Omenugha, a professor of Mass Communication in Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, is the second female professor of Mass Communication in Nigeria.
She was the immediate Commissioner for Education in Anambra State for eight years between 2014 and 2022, and therefore the longest Commissioner For Education, to serve the government of Anambra State. During her time as commissioner for education in Anambra State, the Ministry of Education received many laurels and awards within Nigeria and internationally. Various innovative efforts were introduced in teaching and learning experiences in Anambra State. She also made efforts to strengthen learning for children with special needs across Anambra State.
In her new role as the Vice Chancellor of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu University, Prof. Omenugha is expected to bring her expertise, experience, and contacts not just in the management of the institution, but also in repositioning the university as a top learning and research institution with recognized and verified rankings by relevant global, regional and national organizations.
