Premier League Midfield Power Rankings: Rice, Caicedo Lead New Top 10 List

—

A renewed debate over midfield supremacy has emerged in the Premier League, with Declan Rice and Moises Caicedo now at the centre of conversations once dominated by wide forwards.

Chelsea and Arsenal’s evolving rivalry has shifted attention to the heart of the pitch, inspiring a new ranking of the league’s most influential central midfielders based on form, fitness and consistency over the past two seasons.

The Premier League’s strength-in-depth means dozens of midfielders could qualify for recognition, but narrowing the list to ten creates a sharper, more competitive field.

The ranking focuses strictly on deep-lying or central operators capable of playing in a traditional three-man midfield, excluding hybrid forwards and attacking 10s.

Arsenal’s Martin Zubimendi opens the list at No.10, having made an immediate impact after joining from Real Sociedad.

He has stabilized Arsenal’s possession play and added the progressive passing presence the club previously lacked.

Chelsea’s Enzo Fernández follows in ninth place, finally settling into Premier League rhythm and becoming a reliable part of Enzo Maresca’s system after a difficult transition period.

Liverpool’s Dominik Szoboszlai sits eighth, offering work rate and creativity even during a difficult period for the champions.

Granit Xhaka’s remarkable resurgence places him seventh, with the former Arsenal midfielder now anchoring Sunderland’s impressive return to top-flight football.

Newcastle’s captain Bruno Guimarães ranks sixth for his all-round influence, while Arsenal skipper Martin Odegaard takes fifth after battling injury but still maintaining elite creative standards.

Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes edges ahead in fourth, recognised for his reliability and high-volume chance creation.

The News Chronicle observed that selection for the top three was particularly competitive, shaped by long-term performances and each player’s importance to their club.

Manchester City’s Rodri claims third place despite limited appearances in recent months, his influence still considered irreplaceable. Chelsea’s Moises Caicedo ranks second after evolving into one of the league’s most dominant ball-winning midfielders.

Arsenal’s Declan Rice finishes at No.1, regarded as the league’s most complete midfielder and a consistent benchmark for excellence. His all-round impact, from ball recovery to set-piece quality, has set him apart as the Premier League’s leading central midfielder in 2025.
