When Growth Rises on Paper But People Sink In Hunger — Mask of Statistics
George O. Sylvester said: “When a nation’s growth rises on paper but its people sink in hunger, that is not progress — it is polished poverty wearing a mask of statistics.”
That is exactly what present gladiators do — using figure to confuse gullible followers.
They say GDP grew 4.43% Q2 2026 — up from 4.23% Q2 2025 — on track to $1 trillion by 2030. They say inflation fell from 34.80% Dec 2024 to 15.15% Dec 2025. On paper, progress.
But mask falls when you ask: Where is growth felt?
World Bank April 2026 — same period — says poverty rose from 56% in 2023 to 61% in 2024 to 63% in 2025 — 140 million Nigerians below poverty line. IMF June 2026 confirms: 63% poverty, 27 million food insecurity autumn 2025. WFP warns 30.6 million face acute hunger 2025.
How can growth rise and people sink?
Because NBS changed base year from 2009 to 2024 — statistical sleight of hand. Month-on-month food inflation still rising 1.65% August 2025.
