The Inspector General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, represented by the Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of the South-East Zone, DIG Kenechukwu Onwuemelie, on June 23, led a strategic stakeholders’ engagement on security in Anambra State.
‎The meeting, part of a nationwide zonal tour initiated by the IGP, brought together security agencies, traditional institutions, government officials, community leaders, and other stakeholders to strengthen collaboration in tackling security challenges.
‎In his keynote address, DIG Onwuemelie unveiled a four-pillar policing strategy for Anambra State centred on community engagement, stakeholder collaboration, crime prevention, and public trust-building. He stressed that effective policing depends on public support and intelligence sharing.
‎The DIG described the engagement as a strategic effort aimed at addressing security threats through coordinated responses, early intervention, and stronger partnerships between the police and communities.
‎He announced plans to enhance intelligence gathering, strengthen rural policing, increase joint operations with other security agencies, and review deployment patterns to improve response times.
He also pledged to uphold discipline and professionalism within the Force.
‎Stakeholders were urged to provide timely information on suspicious activities, support conflict mediation efforts, assist victims of violence, and ensure that vigilante groups operate within the law.
‎Representing the Anambra State Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, the officer in charge of Operations, Ibrahim Ezikiel, described security as a collective responsibility and noted that cooperation among security agencies and communities has helped reduce crime in the state.
‎In her vote of thanks, the Chairperson of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Anambra State Chapter, Comrade Tochukwu Ifejika called for greater inclusion of women in security discussions and urged sustained police engagement with the public to address emerging security concerns.
‎Earlier, the DIG Onwuemelie paid a courtesy call to the Traditional Ruler of Awka, His Royal Majesty Igwe Gibson Nwosu, who commended security agencies for their efforts and pledged continued support in promoting peace and grassroots intelligence gathering.
