The Niger State Commissioner of Police, Shawulu Danmamman, revealed in Minna on Thursday, that illegal mining has been a significant security challenge in the state, particularly in areas such as Shiroro, Rafi, Paiko, Katcha, and Chanchaga.
According to Danmamman, the police, in collaboration with other security agencies, have been addressing the issue through regular raids and arrests.
“This year alone, we have arrested over 70 illegal miners, recovering items like head pans, shovels, diggers, cutlasses, sticks, and other dangerous tools,” he said.
He added that the arrested suspects were prosecuted and handed various punishments.
Danmamman credited the successes in combating crime to strong community engagement and collaboration with stakeholders, particularly through the sharing of information and intelligence.
He emphasized the need for continued cooperation between law enforcement and the public to ensure a crime-free state.
