Police Confirm 30 Political Killings Ahead of Osun Governorship Election

—

The Nigeria Police Force has confirmed that it is investigating 30 cases of alleged politically motivated killings ahead of the August 15 governorship election in Osun State.

The Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Anietie Iniedu, disclosed this on Tuesday during an interview on Channels Television monitored by The News Chronicle.

According to Iniedu, several arrests have already been made in connection with the killings, with some suspects publicly paraded by the police while others have been arraigned in court.

However, the police spokesperson declined to disclose details of the cases, suspects or their alleged accomplices, explaining that doing so could prejudice ongoing court proceedings and investigations.

He assured Nigerians that more information would be made available after investigations are concluded and the matters before the courts are determined.

Iniedu recalled that the IGP recently visited Osogbo, the Osun State capital, in response to rising political tensions and incidents of pre-election violence.

He said the police chief met with Governor Ademola Adeleke and other stakeholders, warning against political thuggery and violence ahead of the election.

“The IGP also warned parents to caution their children and wards to shun violence and desist from being used as tools to settle political scores,” he said.
