A man and his son have been burnt to death in a road crash at Sabon Barki in Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State, while three other persons sustained injuries.
The tragic incident occurred at about 4:20 p.m. on Sunday when a commercial tricycle, popularly known as Keke NAPEP, conveying a family returning from church service reportedly caught fire after being hit by another vehicle.
An eyewitness, Kefas Gyang, who spoke to newsmen in Jos on Sunday, said the tricycle was engulfed in flames, leaving bystanders struggling to rescue the occupants.
Gyang, who said he arrived at the scene after the collision, recounted how efforts to save the victims were hampered by the intensity of the fire.
“I was passing by on my way from work when I saw people crying. I went closer to find out what had happened and saw people trying to rescue the victims,” he said.
“But the fire was too much for us to handle. It was beyond our strength, and we could not do much to rescue them from the burning tricycle.”
He clarified that he did not witness the actual collision, explaining that he arrived after the crash had occurred.
“When the other vehicle hit the Keke, I was not there. I only came across the scene afterwards and saw people crying,” he added.
According to the eyewitness, the victims’ wife and mother sustained a broken leg, while two other children and the tricycle rider were taken to hospital for treatment.
Gyang further alleged that the driver of the vehicle that hit the tricycle fled the scene after the crash.
Efforts to reach the Public Education Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps in Plateau State, Peter Longsan, for comments were unsuccessful as he was not readily available at the time of filing this report.
