Petrol Price Debate Sparks Fresh Clash Between Fayose and Reno Omokri

—

Political commentator Prince Isaac Fayose has taken a swipe at Reno Omokri over comments comparing petrol prices in Nigeria and the United Kingdom, arguing that the real issue is not the price itself but the earning power of citizens.

Speaking throughout a debate broadcast on AIT and subsequently distributed online, Fayose questioned the rationale behind comparing fuel prices in both nations absent minimum wage disparities.

He contended that since Nigerians battle with a N70,000 minimum pay and petrol costs more than N1,400 per litre, UK employees earn much more and are better able to absorb increasing living expenses.

The News Chronicle reports that Fayose emphasised that the economic reality in Nigeria cannot be contrasted with that in industrialised nations since many Nigerians now spend a large percentage of their income on transportation, electricity, and gasoline for generators.

In the popular comments, Fayose charged Omokri with defending government initiatives at the cost of underprivileged Nigerians. He argued that people should have policies that raise their level of living rather than comparisons that disregard local circumstances.

The remarks have since drawn criticism on social media, with many Nigerians arguing over the effects of growing gasoline prices, inflation, and the growing gap between salaries and daily living expenditures in the nation.
