Peggy Ovire Celebrates as Divorce From Frederick Leonard Is Finalised

—

Nollywood actress Peggy Ovire has confirmed that her divorce from fellow actor Frederick Leonard has been finalised, sharing celebratory posts on her Instagram story.

On Tuesday, July 8, 2026, Ovire posted a message that read: “THANK YOU JESUS. IT IS DONE,” accompanied by dancing emojis. The post was shared roughly 19 hours before a follow-up story in which her friend and colleague Angela Eguavoen wrote: “My Queen is free!! Hallelujah,” a message Ovire reposted.

Ovire and Leonard’s marriage ran into public trouble in June 2026, when Leonard faced accusations of having an affair with a married woman. The allegations drew comparisons online to backlash previously directed at actor Chike over similar claims, with several users on X questioning why reactions to Leonard appeared milder.

The news has drawn responses, with many users debating whether celebrating a divorce publicly is appropriate.

User @JoeDahMayor criticised the celebratory tone of the announcement, writing: “This people will make marriage look like a war zone, celebrating divorce like a soldier that came back from Sambisa forest after 10 years.”

User @BulusPaul9 questioned the repeated references to Jesus in both the wedding and the divorce announcement, writing: “You wan marry ‘Thank you Jesus.’ You wan divorce ‘Thank you Jesus.’ What exactly do we take this Jesus for?”

Others defended Ovire’s right to express relief. User @hannah_aderonke wrote: “Na only the two knew wetin their eyes don see for the marriage. So if she said Thank You Jesus, who am I to condemn her.”

Some users pointed to the short length of the marriage as a point of concern. User @Gift22720433 wrote: “They didn’t last… in marriage. Chai! What’s going on?” User @ikekeh12 questioned why Leonard, who married for the first time at 45, was already divorced within three years.

User @ashman_babane pushed back on the framing of the divorce as freedom, arguing that some Nigerian women “gaslight” their partners into taking blame for a marriage’s failure.

Neither Peggy Ovire nor Frederick Leonard has issued an official statement addressing the terms of the divorce.
