PDP Members Will Determine My Future in 2027 -Atiku

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has stated that members of his party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), will decide his future in the 2027 general elections.

He mentioned that it is too early to determine whether he will run for the presidency again.

In an interview with the BBC on Friday, Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar said his recent meeting with the Labour Party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, could signal a potential alliance in the lead-up to the 2027 elections.

Atiku met separately with Peter Obi, former Senate President Bukola Saraki, and former Governor of Jigawa State Sule Lamido last week.

He stated that these meetings were beneficial for democratic governance in Nigeria and hinted at a possible coalition between opposition parties. He also dismissed claims that they could not agree on a consensus candidate.

Atiku mentioned that if PDP members unanimously decided to zone the party’s presidential candidate to the South East, he would support the decision.

“I’ve made it clear since the last elections that if our party members reached a consensus that the South East should produce the candidate, we would all agree. And if our parties had a similar agreement, then so be it,” Atiku said.

He confirmed the potential alliance between opposition parties ahead of the 2027 elections but could not provide details on when it would be finalized.

Atiku also refuted rumors that he would retire from active politics after the 2023 elections.

He emphasized, “We fiercely fought against military governments, let alone civilian administrations. So, if you think otherwise, you might be dreaming. We will never stop fighting against injustice and bad governance. I am not yet tired of political activism.”

He added that his continued involvement in politics does not prevent new candidates from having their opportunities.
