Dr. Muhammad Ali Pate

Professor Muhammad Ali Pate, the Coordinating Minister of the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, has reiterated the unwavering commitment of the current administration to overhaul the healthcare system, aiming to achieve Universal Healthcare Coverage for all Nigerians.

During the 6th meeting of the BHCPF Ministerial Oversight Committee held recently in Abuja, the Minister emphasized that healthcare transformation, renewal, and accessibility are within reach with the endorsement of a Sector Wide Approach (SWAp) and the Health Sector Renewal Investment Program (NHSRIP).

Pate underscored the significance of reforming the Basic Healthcare Provision Fund (BHCPF), its programs, operations, and fiduciary systems to enhance public trust and accountability. He disclosed that all states and the Federal Capital Territory have committed to a remediation plan, vowing to enhance healthcare services nationwide.

Highlighting the approval of N25 billion to the National Primary Healthcare Development Agency (NPHCDA) and the National Health Insurance Authority gateways, Pate emphasized the need for a robust governance structure and clearer guidelines to ensure equitable healthcare access, particularly for vulnerable groups.

The Minister outlined revisions to the guidelines, focusing on reducing maternal mortality rates, out-of-pocket payments, and standardizing quality healthcare across primary healthcare facilities. He assured measures to address inequalities, support frontline workers, and strengthen financial management and transparency.

Encouraging active citizen participation, Pate urged Nigerians to monitor BHCPF resource utilization through dedicated communication channels. Oyebanji Filani, Ekiti State Commissioner for Health and Human Services, echoed the commitment of State Health Commissioners to ensure access to quality healthcare for every Nigerian.

Muyi Aina, Executive Director of NPHCDA, highlighted ongoing program implementation reforms to incentivize primary health centers for high-quality care, with the ultimate goal of ensuring every Nigerian has access to essential services. As stakeholders anticipate tangible improvements in health services nationwide, the government’s dedication to healthcare transformation remains steadfast.
