The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has confirmed that several passengers were injured following an accident involving the Abuja–Kaduna train service on Monday morning.
According to the Managing Director of the corporation, Kayode Opeifa, the incident occurred at about 10:30 a.m. near the Asham Train Station.
Opeifa explained in a statement that the accident happened after the rear locomotive made contact with the passenger coaches behind it due to a fault in the coupling device that connects the train compartments.
He added that passengers who sustained injuries were immediately taken to nearby medical facilities for treatment, stressing that no fatalities were recorded in the incident.
In recent times, Nigeria’s railway lines, particularly the Abuja–Kaduna route, have experienced operational challenges including occasional derailments. The Nigerian Senate had in 2025 launched an investigation into the challenges facing the rail system, with the probe led by Adams Oshiomhole.
