Panic In Borno As Flood Ravages Popular Zoo

Residents of Maiduguri are currently panicking over the flooding of Maiduguri Zoo, popularly referred to as Sanda Kyarimi Park located in the city centre.

It was gathered that the park which is situated near a waterway is currently flooded by water

The flood which spread across major centres in the city begun around 1 a.m. on Tuesday September 10th and has displaced many families living around Lagos Street, Modugari, Gwange, Monday Market, and a few other places.

One of the residents in Maiduguri, Kabiri Sani told newsmen that the zoo was flooded this morning, and was sure that animals would escape.

Early this morning, I left Wulari to Polo, while passing through the zoo area, with the water level I saw, I was shocked and I began to fear because I know the calibre of wild animals in that zoo,(sic)” he stated.

Another resident residing in Gwange, Salamatu Mohammed said that she and her family have been displaced and are currently compelled to leave the environment because of the news that the zoo was already flooded.

He said, “I left immediately I was able to rescue my properties and myself. I cannot stay in that area because I am sure that animals are currently outside.”

However, a viral picture on Facebook shows an Ostrich that escaped from the zoo on the street in an area close to Borno ICAN’s office.

Meanwhile, it was earlier reported that critical infrastructures including roads government offices, markets, and the palace of the Shehu of Borno are currently submerged by the flood.
