About 426,448 Nigerians have fled the country and are currently living as refugees in neighbouring Niger, Cameroon and Chad, according to the latest data from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).
Niger hosts the largest number, with 278,077 Nigerian refugees, representing 65.2 per cent of the total. Cameroon follows with 126,320 refugees, while Chad hosts 22,051.
The figures, updated as of July 31, 2026, for Niger and Cameroon, and June 30, 2026, for Chad, highlight the continuing humanitarian impact of prolonged insecurity and conflict in parts of Nigeria.
The UNHCR data also showed that Nigeria, Cameroon, Chad and Niger collectively have about 3.26 million internally displaced persons (IDPs).
Nigeria accounts for the largest share, with approximately 2.33 million internally displaced persons, representing 71.5 per cent of the regional total. Cameroon has 510,855, Chad 219,595, while Niger records 199,542.

The figures underscore Nigeria’s position at the centre of the regional displacement crisis, as millions remain displaced within the country while hundreds of thousands have crossed international borders in search of safety.
The UNHCR said the displacement crisis is part of a broader humanitarian emergency affecting West and Central Africa, where millions of refugees, asylum seekers and internally displaced persons continue to require humanitarian assistance.
