A Boko Haram attack late Sunday night killed around 40 Chadian soldiers in a garrison near Ngouboua, in the Lake Chad region close to the Nigerian border.
The assault targeted a unit housing over 200 soldiers, local sources reported.
In a statement on Monday, the Chadian presidency confirmed the attack and the number of casualties.
President Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno visited the site on Monday morning, announcing an operation to pursue the attackers to their furthest hideouts.
Among the casualties was the unit’s commander, according to a senior officer who spoke anonymously. The attackers managed to seize weapons and ammunition before retreating.
