The Nigerian Army on Saturday morning reportedly killed more than 30 Boko Haram terrorists during a fierce gun battle in Kirewa Community, Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State.
According to reports obtained by The News Chronicle, the terrorists invaded the community at about 12:55 a.m. in large numbers and allegedly split themselves into three groups before launching coordinated attacks with heavy gunfire.
Military troops stationed in the area reportedly responded swiftly with superior firepower, leading to an intense exchange of gunfire that lasted for several hours.
Sources said over 30 insurgents were neutralized during the operation, while the Nigerian Army recorded four casualties.
The attack is believed to be one of the latest attempts by Boko Haram fighters to infiltrate communities in southern Borno, an area that has witnessed repeated insurgent activities in recent years.
As of the time of filing this report, military authorities had yet to officially comment on the incident.
