OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has informed shareholders that the company is contemplating a shift in its governance structure from a nonprofit to a for-profit business model.
According to the report, Altman mentioned that one potential scenario involves transitioning to a for-profit benefit corporation.
This model is already being employed by competitors such as Anthropic and xAI.
 The discussions are still in early stages and fluid, with no final decision yet made.
Altman and his fellow directors are also exploring other possible approaches.
In response to queries from Reuters regarding the potential restructuring, OpenAI emphasized its ongoing commitment to its core mission. “We remain focused on building AI that benefits everyone. The nonprofit is core to our mission and will continue to exist,” the company stated.
