A violent clash between two rival groups over the ownership of the Donga Central Mosque in Taraba State has left one person dead and property destroyed.
The incident happened on Tuesday evening after reports emerged that members of the Izala Jos sect and the Danburam family planned to forcefully take control of the disputed mosque in Donga town.
Police authorities, after receiving intelligence about the planned confrontation, invited both sides and warned them against actions that could disturb public peace.
Security personnel were also deployed to the area to maintain order.
However, despite the warning, both groups later gathered in large numbers, armed with local weapons such as dane guns, cutlasses, and stones, leading to a violent clash.
Security operatives eventually dispersed the crowd using smoke grenades, but not before a 20-year-old man, Biliya Zakari from Asibiti Ward, was killed.
A nearby structure close to the mosque was also destroyed during the fight.
Authorities say the situation has been brought under control, though additional security has been deployed to ensure lasting peace in the area.
