The Nigerian women’s team, known as the Super Falcons, faced a narrow defeat in their first Group C match against Brazil in the women’s football tournament at the Olympics.
Gabi Nunes scored the decisive goal in the 37th minute with a sublime assist from Marta, delivering a heartbreaking moment for Nigeria. Despite the defeat, the Falcons shared 50% of the ball possession with their opponents and had more goal attempts, with one of Rasheedat Ajibade’s strikes hitting the woodwork.
Surprisingly, Coach Randy Waldrum benched Africa’s Women’s Footballer of the Year, Asisat Oshoala, for the entire 90 minutes. The 25-year-old has been struggling with form since moving to Bay FC from Barcelona in January.
On Sunday, the Super Falcons will face Spain in their second Group C match.
