Veteran Nigerian comedian and actor Okey Bakassi has dismissed claims circulating on social media that his marriage has collapsed, describing the reports as false and disrespectful to his family.
The entertainer, whose real name is Okechukwu Onyegbule, addressed the speculation in a post on X, where he criticised the spread of fabricated stories for online attention and engagement.
The rumours gained traction after a manipulated video emerged online, falsely suggesting that his wife had requested a divorce following 15 years of receiving support from him and caring for their children.
Reacting to the development, Bakassi expressed displeasure over the misleading content, insisting that his marriage remains intact. He also noted that he and his wife recently marked their 25th wedding anniversary.
The comedian further challenged claims about his wife’s personal life, clarifying that although she resides in Canada, reports identifying her as a nurse were inaccurate.
He urged his fans, friends and members of the public to disregard the claims and report the account responsible for circulating the video for allegedly violating X’s rules.
“It is so disrespectful and sad that, out of desperation to get views or create viral content, someone will go to the extent of spreading fake news about my very happy family.
“Please, my family, friends and fans, disregard any story that my wife and I are having issues. It’s the work of evil, senseless people.
“Please help me report the originator’s page for this fake news on X (Twitter) for violating the rules. My family is intact and in God’s hands,” he wrote.
Bakassi, who has built a longstanding career in Nigeria’s entertainment industry, has also taken on traditional leadership responsibilities as the ruler of the Umuihuocha Autonomous Community in Imo State.
The comedian recently discussed the challenge of balancing his professional commitments with his duties as a traditional ruler, reflecting the different responsibilities he now carries beyond the entertainment industry.
