An Anambra State High Court presided over by Justice Jude Obiorah has sentenced to 6 years imprisonment on count one, and another 6 years on count two, a native doctor from Umuofor Village Okija in Ihiala LGA of Anambra State, Mr. Ekene Igboekweze, popularly known as ”Eke Hit”.
Both sentences are to run concurrently without option of fine, and in consideration of the period of detention.
Eke Hit became widely known on social media for advertising charms for wealth, among others, and was arrested by Agunechemba security personnel in February 2025 alongside two other popular native doctors.
Their arrests came after Governor Chukwuma Soludo signed the Anambra State Homeland Security Law 2025, which bans native doctors from claiming to make people rich through “oke ite” and other rituals, or preparing charms for criminals.
The convict and the other native doctors were arraigned before the Judge on April 4, 2025 on charges of conspiracy, kidnapping, preparing protective charms for criminals, and money rituals.
In his defence, Eke Hit, who said that he is a registered herbalist and member of Odinani Okija Traditional Association, explained that he only uses herbs and roots in his practices, while his viral videos were old contents made before the Anambra State Homeland Security Law 2025 came into force.
Delivering judgement, Justice Obiora agreed that the prosecution proved counts one and two beyond reasonable doubt, but resolved count three in favor of the defendant.
Admitting that he has learnt his lessons before he was sentenced, Eke Hit pleaded for forgiveness, urging the court to consider his family and newborn triplets he hasn’t seen.
Testifying to his good behavior while also pleading for the mercy of the court, one of his two wives, Elizabeth, and a half brother, Chief Mike, said Eke Hit is the only son of his mother in a polygamous family, not a bad person, and is kind to people around him.
But in his judgement, Justice Obiorah found the accused guilty on counts one and two and sentenced him accordingly.
Speaking to newsmen after the court proceedings, Counsel to Eke Hit, Chief Emmanuel Egbunonu, said the court was considerate in waiving the 40 million naira fine attached to the two charges, while Barrister Fabian Okeke, from the Anambra State Ministry of Justice, described the judgement of the court as a way of protecting the society from dangerous trends that destroy human creativity and ability to engage in meaningful ventures.
