Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang believes AI will create more jobs than it destroys, and he says the clearest winners will be people willing to work with their hands.
For young people starting out or considering a career change, his comments, backed by hiring data from across the industry, point to a few practical lessons.
1. Consider a trade, not just a degree
Huang has repeatedly argued that skilled trades are entering a boom period. Speaking on Fox Business last week, he said, “Having a large population of skilled labor and people who build things, that make things with their hands, is tremendous for the United States.”
He made a similar point to the UK’s Channel 4 News in September 2025, saying the demand for electricians, plumbers and carpenters would keep rising as AI infrastructure expands. “The skilled craft segment of every economy is going to see a boom,” he said. “You’re going to have to be doubling and doubling and doubling every single year.”
If you’re deciding between a four-year degree and a trade certification, the practical takeaway is that trades now offer a shorter training path and, in many cases, comparable or better pay.
2. Pay attention to where the real demand is
Industry estimates suggest 2.1 million skilled trades jobs could go unfilled in the United States by 2030. Within that figure, an additional 130,000 electrical workers will be needed by 2030, and more than 350,000 new auto technicians by 2029. A gap this size tends to push wages up and job security with it, which matters more to a career decision than general optimism from any single executive.
3. Don’t assume trade work means lower pay
In Piketon, Ohio, SB Energy, a SoftBank Group company, is hiring for a data center project tied to Nvidia’s $105 billion credit commitment to OpenAI, announced in early August 2026. One listed role, power-generation project manager, pays between $140,000 and $170,000 a year, more than double the area’s median household income of about $55,000, according to regional group OhioSE. Figures like this show that skilled trade work is no longer a fallback option for people who cannot afford further education. It can be a well-paid career on its own.
4. If you’re staying in white-collar work, expect change, not disappearance
Huang has pushed back on warnings from Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, who wrote last week that AI’s disruption of the workforce is being underestimated. Huang’s response was more measured than alarmist: “Everybody’s job changes. Some jobs will be eliminated. Many new jobs will be created.” For young professionals already in office-based careers, the lesson is to expect your role to shift rather than vanish, and to build skills that keep pace with that shift rather than assuming AI will make your job obsolete overnight.
5. Look for where major companies are investing in training
Blackstone president and chief operating officer Jon Gray said earlier this year that blue-collar employment is likely to see a “huge boom” over the next five years. One Blackstone-backed company, QTS, had about 10,000 workers on its data center job sites a year ago. That number is expected to reach 40,000 by the end of 2026, a 300 percent increase.
To help close the trades gap, BlackRock, Carhartt, Ford Motor Company and Google formed the Alliance for America’s Skilled Trades, a partnership that trains workers across 30 states and plans to expand nationwide. Young people should watch for programs like this, since large-scale corporate investment in training often means lower-cost or fully funded entry points into a trade.

Jensen Huang’s optimism is worth noting, but he also has a direct interest in the AI infrastructure boom, since Nvidia’s chips power the data centers driving it. The more reliable signals for a young job seeker are the hard numbers: actual job postings, actual salary ranges, and actual shortfall projections. These are available now and give a clearer picture than any single forecast, however confident it is.
