The Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Kebbi State gave out bags of rice and money to 18 families of journalists who died while working.
The head of the NUJ in Kebbi State, Mallam Garba Muhammad Yeldu, gave these items to the families in Birnin Kebbi. He said they wanted to help the families because the economy is hard.
Yeldu said they planned to do this during Ramadan, but they couldn’t. He said big families got rice, and small families got 15,000 naira.
He said: ” This programme ought to have taken place on the first day of Ramadan but due to circumstances beyond our control, God has destined that it will be held today.
“We are considering large families with a bag of rice and small families will go home with N15,000 cash”.
Yeldu thanked Labana Rice Mill and Gaanou Parboiled Rice for helping the NUJ. He said their help would make life easier for the families.
The Chief Press Secretary to the Governor of Kebbi State, Alhaji Ahmed Idris, said this was a good thing, especially during Ramadan.
He said he told the Governor and the Secretary to the State Government about it, and they were happy. Ahmed said the state government cares about journalists and their families.
Ahmed said the government will keep supporting journalists and pray for the families who lost their loved ones.
