The Nutrition Society Of Nigeria has commended the Wife of Anambra State Governor, Mrs Nonye Soludo, for her efforts at promoting healthy nutrition and a positive lifestyle among the people of the state. The commendation came on Monday, when members of the Nutrition Society of Nigeria (NSN) Anambra State Chapter, visited her at the Governor’s Lodge, Awawbia.
The Nutrition Society of Nigeria is the only and largest gathering of stakeholders in nutrition in Nigeria. The professional and non-governmental association was founded in 1963 at the University of Ibadan. Receiving her guests, Mrs. Soludo said part of the goals of her healthy living project is to champion a strategic nutrition campaign that will tackle growing malnutrition and undernutrition among children and women in the state.
The governor’s wife pointed out that most of the common causes of household sicknesses and deaths are a result of wrong food choices, with most consumers misinterpreting the overall essence of food.
She said to correct the ugly trend, all hands must be on deck, explaining that people have to be taught in clear detail the efficacy of healthy foods.
Mrs. Soludo explained that the reason nutrition comes first on the healthy living pillars is because of how important it is to live and kick out diseases, and promised to partner with nutritionists and dieticians to achieve the target of eradicating growing malnutrition in the state.
“I began this campaign because of what I observed about how our people consume poisons in the name of food. I was worried that with the way our people are going, life expectancy will grossly drop in the coming years.
“To achieve this, I underscored the need to start early to imbue our children with this knowledge to begin to watch what they eat, the habits they develop, and how they take care of their bodies.
“That’s essentially what we do at the healthy living club and now that we have successfully launched it in our schools in Anambra, we are hopeful that we are on course towards changing a lot of negative things that would have affected our lives,” she said.
The governor’s wife further decried the ravage of deadly diseases in children and cautioned mothers to capitalize on the nutritional values of vegetables and purely organic food products.
Earlier in her remarks, the President of the Nutrition Society of Nigeria, Anambra State Chapter, Dr. Justina Okoli, said the association has been keeping tabs on the healthy living activities of the governor’s wife, and how she is systemically pushing her nutrition campaign in the state.
She noted that NSN is open to collaborating with the governor’s wife’s NGO on achieving related goals, explaining that the project will also require the services of technocrats in the field of nutrition to assist with insights and sustainable components.
The governor’s wife was during the visit, presented with a souvenir in appreciation of what she is doing in the area of healthy living.
