The Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) has sealed the headquarters of Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company (KAEDCO) in Kaduna over alleged outstanding statutory tax liabilities.
The enforcement action was carried out following an order by the NRS Executive Chairman, Zacch Adedeji, and was communicated through a non-compliance notice posted at the entrance of the company’s premises.
According to the notice, the company allegedly failed to fulfil its statutory tax obligations despite receiving previous notifications from the revenue authority.
The NRS said the action was taken in accordance with the Nigeria Tax Act, Nigeria Tax Administration Act and other relevant tax laws.
The agency also warned that any officer or agent of the company found to have violated tax regulations could face prosecution and other penalties prescribed by law.
It further cautioned against any unauthorised removal or interference with the sealed notice, directing taxpayers seeking clarification or resolution to contact its Debt Management and Enforcement Department in Abuja or the nearest enforcement office.
An official of Kaduna Electric, who spoke anonymously, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the notice was posted on Friday. The official said customers who arrived at the premises were asked to leave because there were no staff available to attend to them.
The development comes shortly after the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) dissolved the board of directors of Kaduna Electric over what it described as severe operational inefficiencies, failure to meet required capital expenditure targets and a cumulative market debt exceeding N456.5 billion.
NERC subsequently appointed an interim management team led by Abubakar Umar Hashidu as Administrator to oversee the company’s operations in Kaduna, Sokoto, Kebbi and Zamfara states while restructuring efforts are undertaken.
