Nokia Launches World’s First Immersive Voice Call
Finnish company CEO, Pekka Lundmark and President of Nokia Technologies, Jenni Lukander
Nokia has achieved a major breakthrough in communication technology.
On Tuesday, the Finnish company announced that its CEO, Pekka Lundmark, made the world’s first call using “immersive audio and video” technology.
This innovation enhances call quality with three-dimensional sound, making conversations feel more lifelike.
Lundmark made the call to Finland’s Ambassador of Digitalization and New Technologies, Stefan Lindström.
The technology behind this is the Immersive Voice and Audio Services (IVAS) codec, a part of the upcoming 5G advanced standard.
IVAS allows users to hear sounds in a spatial, real-time format, unlike the current one-dimensional smartphone audio.
During the call from Nokia’s campus in Espoo, Lundmark showcased the unique audio experience to Lindström. He stated, “This groundbreaking audio technology takes you to the caller’s environment, creating a massively improved listening experience for voice and video calls. It offers significant benefits for both personal and professional use.”
Though not yet available in mobile networks, Nokia successfully demonstrated IVAS technology in a live call using a public 5G network.
Lindström praised the technology, noting that it enhances the quality and richness of calls, making interactions more engaging.
