Popular Nigerian artist, Inetimi Alfred Odom, popularly known as Timaya, recently shared his candid thoughts on the lack of genuine love and friendship in the Nigerian music industry.

According to him, genuine love among musicians has always been scarce.

In an interview with Channels TV, Timaya explained that people often mistake industry colleagues for friends, but in reality, they aren’t. “Your colleagues are not your friends,” he stated. “The only people who genuinely want to see you do better than them are your parents.”

Timaya highlighted the challenges of collaboration within the industry. “If Adidas can work with Gucci, what’s stopping us?” he asked.

But in his experience, collaboration often leads to complications artists may not show up for video shoots, or they’ll demand payment before even considering a feature. This, he says, stifles creativity and the growth of the industry.

“Things have changed. Old ways cannot open new doors,” he added, acknowledging that times are different now, but not necessarily better. Competition and grudges between artists create a tense environment, much like any other office setting. According to him, “There’s never been love in the music industry; it’s just normal.” he concluded
