NLC Confident in Governor Zulum’s Commitment to Implement New Minimum Wage -Inuwa Yusuf

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has expressed confidence in Governor Babagana Umara Zulum’s dedication to implementing the new minimum wage of 70,000 Nigerian Naira.
Inuwa Yusuf, the Borno NLC Chairman, revealed this during an interview with Reporters in Maiduguri on Sunday, July 21, 2024.
According to Yusuf, Governor Zulum assured them of his commitment to the federal government’s agreed minimum wage during a meeting held three days prior.
The chairman emphasized that NLC members in Borno had received their monthly salaries just two days ago and are now eagerly anticipating the governor’s fulfillment of his promise regarding the new minimum wage.
With the recent implementation of local government autonomy, Yusuf called on local government chairmen in Borno State to approve the new minimum wage for their workers.
Currently, these workers are receiving salaries below the expected standard, which the NLC believes needs to be addressed urgently.
Additionally, Yusuf urged NLC members from Borno State to pray for the improvement of the overall situation, expressing hope for positive changes in the near future.
Yusuf explained that the federal government’s agreement to increase the minimum wage came after the president’s initial proposal to increase fuel prices, which the NLC opposed due to concerns about the potential hardships it would impose on their members.
The agreement on the minimum wage increase is seen as a significant development, providing optimism among NLC members.
Furthermore, the chairman mentioned that the president has assured a more frequent review process for the minimum wage, now set to occur every 2-3 years instead of the previous five-year interval.
