The Nigerian Meteorological Agency has issued a weather alert warning of an approaching dust haze expected to affect several states across northern Nigeria.
In an advisory released at 12:35 local time on February 23, 2026, and valid until 23:59 the same day, the agency reported that a dust plume had been observed over parts of Chad and the Niger Republic. According to NiMet, strong northeasterly winds ranging between 40 and 45 knots are forecast to transport the dust mass into northern Nigeria.
The agency said thick dust haze with horizontal visibility of 1000 metres or less is likely to affect most parts of the North East, as well as Kano, Katsina, Kaduna and Plateau states.
NiMet cautioned that suspended dust particles are already present across parts of the northern region and urged the public to take necessary health and safety precautions. Individuals with asthma and other respiratory conditions were advised to exercise particular care during the period.
Airline operators were also advised to obtain airport specific weather reports from NiMet to ensure safe and effective flight planning, as reduced visibility may impact aviation operations.
Residents in affected areas have been encouraged to stay updated through official NiMet communication channels for further advisories and possible extensions of the alert.
